• immixGroup Foundation Golf Tournament Raises $125,000 for Johns Hopkins

More Than $775,000 Donated for Cancer Research and Clinical Training Since 2005

McLean, VA, Thursday, October 6, 2011–The immixGroup Foundation announced today it has raised $125,000 to support cancer research, education, and patient care at Johns Hopkins. The foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization affiliated with immixGroup, Inc. immixGroup helps technology companies do business with the government.

Proceeds from the foundation’s seventh annual charity golf tournament, held at Lansdowne Resort on October 4, brought the total amount raised on behalf of Johns Hopkins to more than $775,000.
These proceeds will fund the immixGroup Foundation Surgical Oncology Fellowship in the Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins. The fellowship, launched by the immixGroup Foundation in 2009, provides funding for an individual post-doctoral research fellow and equips him or her with the skills to become a leader in the field of academic surgical oncology. This two-year program incorporates a year of clinical training followed by a year dedicated to cancer research.
The 2011 immixGroup Foundation Fellow, Fabian M. Johnston, M.D., arrived at Johns Hopkins in July 2011. Dr. Johnston attended Penn State College of Medicine and completed his residency at Washington University in St. Louis after leaving Louisiana State University as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Dr. Johnston will spend the next year of his training in advanced surgical oncology.  He will gain experience in treating patients with colorectal, pancreatic, breast, and other malignancies. Dr. Johnston’s research interests focus on pancreatic and colorectal cancer, as well as public policy as it pertains to cancer care.

Last year’s immixGroup Foundation Fellow, Janivette Alsina, M.D., Ph.D., arrived at Johns Hopkins in July 2010 from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Alsina spent the first year of her fellowship training in advanced surgical oncology. She currently works in the laboratory of Dr. Steven Leach, a world-renowned pancreatic cancer researcher and surgeon, focusing on identifying biomarkers of pancreatic cancer and the biology of cancer stem cells. In addition, she is studying a genetic model of pancreatic cancer in order to gain insights into the molecular basis of this disease that could lead to targeted therapies.
Despite difficult economic conditions, this event continues to benefit from strong support from the government technology community and local businesses. Top-level sponsorship support came from McAfee, Oracle, ArcSight, AccessData, Baker Tilly, and Brocade.
